SmiLe Incubator is a non-profit business incubator for life science startups.

Our vision is to enable a future of better health by nurturing a community of
passionate life science innovators.

That is realized by offering our life science entrepreneurs with advanced
coaching programs, well-equipped labs with state-of-the art instruments,
a large international network of industry partners and investors, and a
community of world-class life science innovators.

We do not take equity in the companies we support.
Working on a no-equity, non-profit basis enables us to build a neutral
platform for launching health innovation into the world.

In the centre of innovation

Located in Medicon Village, a life science cluster in Lund, Sweden, SmiLe facilitates startups looking to develop next-generation healthcare and life science technologies.

By bringing together life-science entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, the university and the municipality, we create an attractive, forward-thinking atmosphere that enables creativity and smart science to thrive.

Being a not-for-profit organization gives companies the security of knowing that we work only in the interests of the entrepreneurs we sponsor.

Innovations from Lund

Many of the things you use or treatments you may need were invented here in Lund. They include:

  • Hemodialysis for patients with kidney failure
  • Steroids used as asthma medicine
  • Dry powder inhalators for asthma medicine
  • Medical ultrasound
  • Laser cancer treatment
  • Dopamine as a neurotransmitter
  • The Tetrahedron milk package made famous by Tetra Pak

Our ambition is to ensure that these four guiding principles are deeply rooted in our day-to-day operation, and determine our conduct and activities, from our processes and interactions, through to the selection of startups and partners.

In evaluating what sustainability means to SmiLe Incubator, we reviewed how our mission, operation and activities reflect the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) published by the United Nations (UN) in the Agenda 2030.

We were happy to find out that the presented SDGs were embedded in everything we do.

The European Spallation Source

The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science infrastructure projects being built in Europe today. Designed to generate neutron beams for science, ESS will benefit a broad range of research, from life science to engineering materials, from heritage conservation to magnetism.

MAX IV Laboratory

MAX IV Laboratory is a new synchrotron facility being built in Lund. When fully developed, it will receive more than 2,000 scientists annually from Sweden and the rest of the world.
